Dressing

Again, first impressions are all important.  The general rule is to dress a notch above the normal dress in the establishment.  When interviewing for a professional position a business suit in a conservative color will serve you best.  Pay attention to tones which complement your coloring.  Keep jewelry simple and to a minimum.  Loud clothing and accessories detract from the interview.

If you are uncertain as to how to dress for the interview you may actually go to the company and observe what employees are wearing.  Remember that in the business environment and the banking world employees usually tend to dress in a conservative, attractive, professional manner.  Should you be applying at a temporary agency it is important to keep your appearance in mind.  Dress according to the job category for which you are applying.

For blue collar and factory positions you will not need a business suit.  However, a dress casual outfit is in order.  For men this would mean a clean, pressed shirt and perhaps khaki pants; for women a neat, attractive outfit would be appropriate.

Should you not have  suitable clothing for the interview, consider shopping at the thrift shops.  They usually have suitable attire at inexpensive prices.  You may also contact Denise Linden at the Academic Skills Center, and she may be able to arrange an appointment for you at Dress for Success in Hartford.

Tattoos and piercings are unacceptable to many employers.  Cover your tattoos if possible.  Pierced ears are acceptable; however, it is wise to take out rings/bars in other visible places.  Be sure that your hair is neatly groomed.  Getting a job is not easy, and these points are very important to employers.
